Dr. Brian Richardson, PhD, Chaminade University’s new director for the Center of Teaching and Learning
Brian Richardson, PhD has been selected to serve as the director for the Center of Teaching and Learning at Chaminade University. Originally from Canada, Dr. Richardson has lived in Hawaii since 1993. He received his first doctorate from the Political Science department at University of Hawaii–Manoa. He later attained his second doctorate degree in Philosophy and a master’s degrees in Library and Information Science and Education Technology.
Previously, Dr. Richardson has worked for more than 10 years at University of Hawaii –Windward Community College (WCC) as a reference librarian, an instructional developer, and the dean of Academic Affairs. He managed the redoing of the college website, was responsible for workshops on computers and teaching, organized a common book program, and helped faculty move their course activities online. He also taught classes, ranging from an introduction to Political Science to graduate classes in Library Science. In addition, for WCC faculty and staff, Dr. Richardson provided a wide range of training, including on topics such as using Adobe Acrobat to create handouts, building simple websites with Dreamweaver, fixing your photographs with Photoshop, how to design online learning experiences, and how to use Google docs to create online forms. Other faculty development activities that he organized included faculty reading groups, and teaching squares, and presentations on classroom assessment and online teaching techniques.
In 2006, Dr. Richardson was awarded the University of Hawaii Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Richardson’s fields of research have included 18th century European exploration in the Pacific, European political philosophy, and information systems in higher education. He has written a book on the voyages of Captain Cook entitled Longitude and Empire: How Captain Cook’s Voyages Changed the World, which will be available in the Sullivan Family Library. His current writing focuses on websites in higher education.
A Pau Hana reception on Aug. 26, from 4-6 pm, will be held in the Faculty Center (Eiben Hall, room 201) to give faculty and staff the opportunity to meet Dr. Richardson, as well as to celebrate a successful first week of school.
