Chaminade’s Environmental + Interior Design (EID) seniors presented a proposal for an on-campus student center in May to the campus community. The project and presentation, which was the capstone course project for EID 471: Commercial Design Studio, focused on sustainable innovation.
The capstone project tasked students with identifying and addressing specific needs of current students, as well as future generations of students. Emphasis was given to the development of a place where multidisciplinary learning could take place between students, faculty, and staff and where principles of sustainability could be promoted. The students also expressed the need for cross-curricular learning opportunities and for an interdisciplinary discourse student center.
“The project’s mission is to educate, develop, and promote ways to take care of the planet, as well as be an exemplar of best sustainable design practices,” said EID associate professor, Liza Lockard, PhD. “It’s very much aligned with the Pope’s Laudato Si and Marianist values.”
Dr. Lockard’s focus on sustainability draws from her research on human habitation in Space; specifically how technological design and the interior architecture of the habitat can facilitate adaptation to the Martian environment.
In addition, students collaborated with the director of Environmental Studies, Gail Grabowsky, PhD, on Hawaii’s environmental issues. They also worked with School of Business faculty member, Aaron Williamson, and his senior accounting class, who helped them navigate the world of financial accounting and project cost.
